A mass action aimed at protecting Russian-language education in Latvia takes place in Riga on Wednesday, May 1. The rally organizer is Latvian Russian Union. This is reported on their Facebook page.

Not only students of Russian schools and their parents, but also indigenous people and teachers joined the demonstrators. The color of the protest is revolutionary red - as a sign of complete disagreement with the current language policy.

The second All-Latvian parent meeting took place in Riga at the end of March. The participants drafted a resolution where they demanded to reconsider the system of preparing school textbooks, including Latvian language ones. The document notes that problems with learning languages appear starting from the kindergarten. Therefore, activists are fighting for the preservation of the system of classical education.

As Russkiy Mir reported, according to MEP, one of the leaders of the Union Miroslav Mitrofanov, national minorities must continue to struggle and not abandon their interests, defending the right to receive education in their native language. MEP urged all those who are not indifferent to this problem, to join the action. In addition, the rally is be devoted to another important topic: the protection of the monument to the Liberator Soldiers in Riga.

Recently, Latvian Parliament’s Commission considered two opposite initiatives; On the Dismantling of the Monument to Liberators and Tatiana Zhdanok’s petition On the Protection of Monuments to Fighters against Nazism. The first of them will be sent for further discussion to the Commission of Foreign Affairs. The initiative guaranteeing the inviolability of monuments was rejected at the very first consideration.
