Sergei Lavrov called cooperation between Russia and UNESCO a mutually enriching partnership, Russian Foreign Ministry website reports. Minister of Foreign Affairs said this during his speech at a ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 65th anniversary of our country's entry into this international organization.

In his opinion, joint creative activity is necessary today. Over the past years, they are trying to shift the work of UNESCO into a political plane more and more often, and to use its platform as a place for settling the score.

The Minister recalled that Russia was already under attack in the sports field, where the political situation is more important than the Olympic ideals and principles of “fair play”. Sergey Lavrov also expressed concern about the "pushing through" Kiev-initiated resolutions on the Crimea at UNESCO. He stressed that they contradict the real situation on the peninsula.

Head of Russian diplomacy is also confident that the work on the communication development program also needs close attention. Journalists and the media in our country are increasingly being pressured abroad under the far-fetched pretext of fighting false news.

He expressed hope that UNESCO will help restoring the objects of world cultural heritage in Syria that have suffered at the hands of extremists.

Russia is also waiting for UNESCO to express a principled position on discriminatory laws on education, adopted by Ukrainian and Latvian authorities.

Russia is among the world leaders in the number of Associated Schools and UNESCO Chairs. Traditionally, we maintain leading positions in the field of scientific cooperation. The opening ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Mendeleev was held at UNESCO headquarters on January 29.

Russia is closely cooperating with the UNESCO World Heritage Center in ensuring the safety of existing facilities and in promoting new applications.

Celebrations in honor of the anniversaries of Maxim Gorky, Ivan Turgenev, Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Marius Petipa were successfully held in Russia and many countries of the world. Their names were included in the UNESCO calendar of significant dates for 2018-2019. It is planned for 2020–2021 to include the celebration of the anniversaries of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ivan Bunin and Ivan Krylov in the Calendar.
