European Union will continue to cooperate with Russia in field of science and technology, RIA Novosti reports. Deputies of the European Parliament supported the prolongation of the relevant agreement. This decision was approved by the EU Council earlier.

The document on cooperation in the field of science and technology was adopted almost two decades ago. It began to operate in 2001. Since then, it has been extended three times for five years. The last agreement ended in February.

The European Commission is convinced that the agreement promotes cooperation with Russia, which benefits both parties. Russia was called the most important subject of science, technology and innovation in the neighborhood of the EU.

In addition, Europe believes that scientific diplomacy in relations with Russia plays a very important role, since it is a source of “soft power” and provides a positive agenda for cooperation.
