Activists of the Russian-speaking community in Latvia plan to continue actions in support of education in Russian, Sputnik reports. The next one is scheduled for January 12 and is to take place in Riga.

According to Miroslav Mitrofanov, who represents Latvia in the European Parliament and heads the Russian Union in Latvia party, education will not be the only topic of the action. The organizers want to draw attention to other problems, ranging from the rise in price of products and services to social inequality. However, Mitrofanov underlined, the focus will remain on the educational reform.

The process of liquidation of Russian schools has been launched in Latvia this year. It is also planned to introduce several measures that will practically deprive the graduates of most Latvian schools of competitiveness. The politician is convinced that Russians will have more difficulties than others, as they will not be allowed to study in their native language.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier that the law that practically destroyed Russian-speaking education in the country was adopted this spring. From the next school year, Russian schools will start teaching in Latvian.

Private universities will stop accepting students for Russian-language programs. Those who are already studying will be given the opportunity to receive a diploma. About a third of students in private universities study in Russian. In the state higher educational institutions programs in Russian have disappeared many years ago.
