A memorial plaque to honor Russian soldiers captured during WWI was installed in Slovenia on November 8. The solemn opening ceremony took place at Lokvitsa na Krasu (Kostanjevica na Krasu), the Russian embassy in Ljubljana reports on its Facebook page.

This area remained the scene of bloody battles between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies for several years. The Russian prisoners of war had to undertake the most difficult and dangerous work there. Their number exceeded forty thousand.

They built railways, bridges and water pipes. The prisoners were kept in two cave which now are called "Russian caves". Apart from the memorial plaque, the "Road of Peace" dedicated to the same tragic events was also recently opened there.

The ceremony was attended by Russian diplomats along with Russian Ambassador Doku Zavgayev, representatives of local authorities, public figures, historians, young people, schoolchildren, veterans and compatriots.
