It is surprising when the party that won the parliamentary elections is excluded from the ruling coalition and practically deprived of power, Russian Ambassador to Latvia Evgeny Lukyanov says.

This way the diplomat commented on the results of the Saeima elections, TASS reports. He recalls that one fifth of the Baltic republic population voted for The Social Democratic Party entitled Harmony.

The Riga mayor Nils Ušakovs runs the Harmony which collected about 20% of votes.

According to the Russian Ambassador, it seems that the number of votes received at the elections is irrelevant in Latvia.

The party received 23 seats in the Saeima. The Who owns the state? centrists party obtains the second position with 16 votes. The New Conservative Party (NCP) sets up the same number of deputies. The For! Movement, the All for Latvia national alliance, the Union of Greens and Farmers and the New Unity also won some seats in parliament.

According to Russkiy Mir, the elections were held on October 6. Negotiations on the ruling coalition formation have been going on for almost a month but still have not yielded any result. Meanwhile, all the leading political forces declared they would not cooperate with the Harmony in any conditions. The organization is likely to remain in opposition.

Evgeny Lukyanov also names apartheid the institution of mass statelessness in Latvia. He recalls non-Latvian is the only definition of this status. However, a high-ranking diplomat adds that the situation can be changed any time if the authorities eliminate the status of a non-citizen.
