Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Kiev regime is trying to hold power with the help of total Ukrainization, said Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). In her opinion, Kiev’s actions violate Ukrainian laws and do not comply with the recommendations of international organizations, TASS reports. Earlier last week the Verkhovna Rada lawmakers reviewed the draft law on the Ukrainian language. The document entitled “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the official language” passed the first reading. According to this bill, Ukrainian language will remain the only official one in all spheres of public life in the country. Authorities will be obliged to use it - from state to municipal level. The service, health and education sector will use it. The new law does not affect interpersonal communication and religion.

The MFA recalled that the Ukrainian parliamentarians supported the most radical version of the bill.

Voting for such a document they contradict their own constitution which advocates the development, use and protection of minority languages. The law also violates other articles of Ukrainian legislature.

Maria Zakharova noted that Moscow had repeatedly warned that Kiev violated international law in the sphere of human rights protection. Now Europe saw it, she added. Apparently, Kiev decided not to pay attention to the fact that such laws may lead to an escalation of tension in society.

The representative of Russian MFA called "informational banditry" the sanctions that the Ukrainian authorities intend to impose against some Ukrainian broadcasters. With its help, the authorities "cleaned" the information space.

The Verkhovna Rada on Octomber 10 proposed punishing 112.Ukraine and NewsOne TV channels for alleged "propaganda of the aggressor state". According to the opposition, this means the introduction of censorship and the elimination of freedom of speech in Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to give an appropriate assessment of these actions.
