Estonia calls to close Russian schools

12.09.2018

The bill calling to liquidat school and pre-school education in Russian was introduced in the Estonian Parliament, Parlamentarian Newspaper reports. The initiative was proposed by the ruling Estonian Reform Party.

Today in Russian schools 60% of disciplines are taught in Estonian language. The deputies propose to close Russian schools and kindergartens because, according to them, teaching in two languages splits society and creates unequal opportunities.

This confrontation of  lawmakers and officials and Russian language community on Russian language oppressing lasts for more than 10 years. According to Russians that live in Estonia, the law will lead to better assimilation of minorities and their identity write-off.
