Knowledge Day celebrated in Russia

The Day of Knowledge celebrated in Russia on September 1. It marks the start of the academic year for schoolchildren and college students.

The Day of Knowledge was established in the Soviet Union in 1984. According to tradition, students line up  outside school, the "first bell" is rung, and the first lessons begin. This year though the celebration happened on Saturday which means no lessons in most of the Russian schools that day.

Chairman of the Committee on Education of the State Duma, Chairman of the Management Board of the Russkiy Mir Foundation Vyacheslav Nikonov congratulated teachers, students and their parents with the beginning of the academic year. He has marked that this beautiful celebration unites our country.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin gave us strategic task for fast development, high technologies breakthrough, economical and social innovations. The role of educational field is pivotal in the implementation of this target.” underlined Vyacheslav Nikonov. He has added that today's education “determines the intellectual potential of each nation and consequently the level of its development. It is for this reason that education has been, is, and will remain a top priority for the Russian state.”
