Mariinsky Theater shows War and Peace opera in China

Chinese music fans from Guangzhou will get to see today or tomorrow Mariinsky Theater performs of Prokofiev's War and Peace opera, TASS reports.

The opera is directed by famous Russian film and theater director Andrei Konchalovsky. The epic staging involves more than 200 artists, the complex stage set weights about 60 tonnes. The soloists are Alexey Markov and Violetta Lukianenko and the orchestra to perform under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theater Music director.

Mariinsky Theater performs in China not for the first time, according to the Press office of the theater. Each time artists receive a very warm reception. Chinese side always prefers large-scale productions. Mariinsky is very popular here, and the biggest interest is for the Russian opera. War and Peace attracts Chinese audience not only by the great music but also patriotic topic.

The Opera Director Grigory Yakerson is positive that arts play a huge role in strengthening relations between countries in cultural and humanitarian field.

As we reported before, these performances are included into the international Mariinsky Festival program that started in Vladivostok and includes Japanese and Chinese cities.
