Russia’s representative office at the United Nations presented FIFA World Cup in the headquarters of the international organization, RIA Novosti informs. An exhibition was opened where one could get to know the tournament schedule and a list of the cities to host the World Cup matches.

Everybody could take a picture with Zabivaka Wolf - a symbol of the championships. Its man-sized figure was a decoration of the exhibition.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres acknowledged that he was going to come to Russia to support the national team of his native country – Portugal.

Permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya is sure that the World Cup is not confined to sports only. Sports is peace, and peace is what the UN is dealing with.

According to the diplomat, guests will bring a piece of Russia from our country and this trip would turn into a true discovery for some people. “Russia is not what people abroad often think about it,” he added.

Vasily Nebenzya explained that the UN is to have online broadcasting of the matches. Russian delegation presented its colleagues from the UN Security Council with T-shirts of their national teams with their names and number 10 on each T-shirt’s back with an emblem of the World Cup. Nebenzya acknowledged that he used to go in for sports and was not only a supporter but even played football on an amateur level.

Presentation ended up with performance by the Russian pop singer Zara, who was appointed a World Cup’s Ambassador. She sang several Russian romance compositions, songs of Bulat Okudzhava and of the French star Edith Piaf.
