Russian Foreign MinistryA meeting between Russian and Syrian religious communities was held the day before in Damascus, RIA Novosti reports.

The central topic of discussion was organization of humanitarian aids to civil population of the country. These talks were the first ones to include representatives of all Syrian confessions. Members of interreligious target group of the Presidential Council for Cooperation with Religious organizations arrived at the country. Chairman of the Moscow’s Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov) has explained that the campaign can be called unprecedented by the delegations’ composition and the degree of its coordination with local religious communities.

It is to become the third one after establishing the target group last spring. The group was initiated by Russian Orthodox Church.

“When it comes to helping Syria, any Russian citizen is eager to help. People keep asking what they can do to help”, Hieromonk Stefan said.

According to Mufti Albir Krganov, heading the Spiritual Assembly of Russia’s Muslims, religious people will play a crucial part in building Syria’s future.

Religious representatives of Syria expressed their gratitude to Russians for the help they desperately needed. “You are our relatives, you are at home here”, Syrian Deputy Minister of Religious Endowment Ahmad Samir al-Kabbani has assured Russia’s religious leaders.
