As reported by the Ministry of Defense the crash took place on Sunday 15 km away of Khame airport. The reason for the disaster is said to be the equipment failure. They also specified that there was no fire attack of the Mi-24 helicopter.

The ministry added that the helicopter’s technician was injured and immediately evacuated to the Khemeimim airport for treatment.

On December 11th Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian troops, which had been there since September 2015 on Damask’s request, out of Syria. However, there is a permanent group of soldiers at the military bases of Khemeimim and Tartus.

Mi-24 is an attack helicopter which has been mass produced since 1971. It is nicknamed a crocodile. These helicopters are used for landing troops, fire support, destruction of the enemy’s manpower and material, transporting supplies and evacuating the injured.

When the Russian Aerospace Force’s operation began in Syria 12 Mi-24 helicopters equipped with GSh-30-2 guns were brought to Khemeimim.
