The military period of the Syrian conflict has come to an end, Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation said. He has said this during a speech at the Moscow Conference on International Security, Lenta.ru reports.

The head of the General Staff noted that the help from Russia allowed to prevent the collapse of the country. The government regained control over most of Syrian territory.

According to Gerasimov, almost 1500 settlements, including Aleppo and Daraa, Deir ez-Zor were liberated. Eight gas and oil fields were also freed  from terrorists.

Tens of thousands of militants were destroyed, and more than forty thousand of them laid down their arms.

Gerasimov stressed that large-scale military operations in Syria were no longer carried out, and the mechanism for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict was active.

Russia launched a military operation in Syria more than three years ago. Over these years, about sixty thousand soldiers of the Russian army gained combat experience. More than one hundred and ten soldiers were killed in Syria. Half of them are victims of the An-26 and Il-20 disasters.
