Russian-American actor Oleg Vidov dies

A renowned Russian-American actor Oleg Vidov died in California at age of 73, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the actor’s widow Joan Borsten. According to her, the actor died of cancer complications today in Westlake Village.

Oleg Vidov was one of few Soviet actors successfully collaborating with Hollywood. He played together with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action movie Red Heat In 1988. He also took one of the roles in Hollywood screenplay of Wild Orchid novel in 1989.

Actor was born 11th of June 1943 in the Moscow region. He spent his childhood in USSR, Mongolia and Germany. He finished school and started to work when he was 14. He appeared on screen for the first time in 1960 when he had a bit part in the movie titled My Friend, Kolka. After that Vidov entered actors’ department of Russian State University of Cinematography. The filmmaker Yury Pobedonostev taught him. While studying he continued to be screened in the films.

​During the 60ies he played in 16 movies, after the graduation he was invited for the main part of Prince Hagbard in Danish-Swedish-Icelandic drama movie The Red Mantle which is recognized as legendary in the Scandinavian countries. After this role, he got a role specialization of the noble handsome man.

The most prominent Soviet roles of Vidov include the Bear in Ordinary Miracle (screened by Erast Garin), Moris Jerald in Headless Horseman, Vladimir in Snowstorm, Tsar Gvidon Tsar in Tale about Tsar Sultan, Senior Lieutenant Vladimir Slavin in Gentlemen of Luck and Volodya in the movie called Moscow, My Love.

He played in Yugoslavian, Italian and American movies. In the 80ies he used to live in Yugoslavia, Austria and Italy after that he moved to USA where he married an American Joan Borsten and lived with her for more than thirty years.

Vidov founded Films by Jove (FBJ) company in 1988 which obtained distribution rights for more than one thousand animation films produced by Soyuzmultfilm abroad over the three years of its existence. All rights for these cartoons belonged to FBJ company until 2007. After that, Vidov ceded the rights to the amination films to Alisher Usmanov who passed them over to the Bibigon channel.
