The academic year at the online school of St. Petersburg State University started on Saturday, October 14. Among its students are citizens of foreign countries and children of compatriots living abroad, reports the website of the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (Mapryal).
Online school initially was designed for students from the Baltic countries in 2018, when Russian educational restrictions were initiated in these countries. The school appeared in response to requests from parents of children who could no longer study in their native language. At first the number of students reached 70, but last school year their number approached 3,000 from eleven countries, ranging from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to Egypt and Spain. Already about 7,000 people have gained access to remote education in Russian school programs, completely free of charge.
Basic general and secondary higher education (grades 5-11) are provided through educational programs. Eleven subjects of the school program are taught at the school, leading specialists not only from St. Petersburg State University but also from other educational institutions of the city and region are involved in the classes. The children have the option to pick subjects they find interesting and can also catch up on lessons through recorded sessions. Additional classes on Saturdays are making it possible to seamlessly integrate SPbSU online school with the primary academic workload.
SPBSU launched a fully remote school catering to students in grades 5 through 10 this year. In contrast to the online school, classes take place five to six times a week, mirroring the schedule of a traditional Russian school. Upon graduation, students will be awarded state certificates.
