11 million Russian-language books have been destroyed in Ukraine as part of the so-called ''de-Russification of libraries,'' Kyiv said. Soviet-era books in Ukrainian and writings by authors who supported Russia's special operation in Ukraine were also destroyed, RIA Novosti reports.

The large-scale destruction of books in Russian was announced by the Deputy Head of the Committee for Humanitarian and Information Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Evgenia Kravchuk.

She cited data as of November 2022, which indicates that more than 19 million books have been written off from the library, most of which are in Russian. The Ukrainian parliamentarian is dissatisfied with the fact that 44% of the country's library collections are books in Russian.

Ukrainian bookstores are also involved in the destruction of books, collecting publications for recycling and directing the proceeds to the needs of the army.
