The portrait of Alexander Pushkin has been printed on a stamp in Greece, Parlamentskaya Gazeta writes. It is part of a set honoring famous philhellenists - foreigners, who supported the struggle of Greece for freedom from the Ottoman yoke in 18th-19th centuries. In a broad sense, this word is used to refer to any foreigner who participated in the Greek National Liberation Revolution of 1821-1829.

The issue was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the liberation struggle in Greece.

The commentary to the set of stamps notes that Alexander Pushkin followed the progress of the revolution, and even created lines glorifying the struggle of the Greeks. The poet was familiar with the general of the Russian army, Alexander Ypsilanti, who led the Greek uprising.

In addition to Pushkin, the stamps feature portraits of the French artist Eugene Delacroix and the English poet Percy Shelley.
