The Canadian authorities continue to ''pursue an anti-Russian course'', the Russian Foreign Ministry states. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the Ottawa's activity in this regard "inappropriate and counterproductive." She added that Canada did not abandon its attempts to interfere in Russian internal affairs  Russia and without any reason accused Moscow of allegedly conducting aggression against Ukraine.

Russia has decided to retaliate against the illegal sanctions that Ottawa imposed in late March against some Russians. In response, Moscow has indefinitely banned nine Canadian citizens from entering Russian territory. The list includes Justice Secretary and Attorney General David Lametti, Federal Prison Service Chief Anne Kelly, Deputy Secretary of National Defense Jody Thomas, Rear Admiral, Armed Forces Chief of Intelligence Scott Bishop and others.

It is noted that Russia is open for dialogue and development of relations with Canada, but they must be based on respect for mutual interests. Maria Zakharova stressed that steps towards each other will be possible when and if they are ready for this in Ottawa.
