Compatriots hold literary picnic dedicated to Gogol in Germany

A series of literary picnics in Erfurt continued with an event dedicated to the life and work of writer Nikolai Gogol. The members of Russian-speaking community of Germany and fans of Russian culture took part in the event. They read Gogol’s works, got acquainted with the traditions of folk holidays and had conversations about Russian culture, the Russkoe Pole reports.

The picnic took place on the eve of the national holiday of Ivan Kupala, and the participants discussed the Gogol's short story Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala, published 190 years ago. The also talked about the traditions of the national holiday.

The event was timed to several anniversaries. Exactly 175 years ago, the writer came to Weimar and spent several days in Thuringia. In addition to reading the works of Nikolai Gogol, the guests performed Russian and Ukrainian songs, listened to music and the reading of Words about Igor’s Regiment performed by composer Pyotr Priprostov. He read the lines of the masterpiece of ancient Russian literature to the accompaniment of the Ukrainian folk instrument - the seven-stringed kobza.
