UN Secretary General supports Russia in visa conflict with USA

16.10.2019

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres supports the Russian position on the issue of refusal of the United States to issue visas, RIA Novosti reports.

The Russian diplomats were unable to attend the General Assembly because of the issue, Deputy Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN Gennady Kuzmin said. The visa issue was discussed on October 15 during a meeting of the headquarters relations committee.

According to Kuzmin, Russia has convinced a wide range of countries that its position is correct and its demands are fair. Moscow believes that the United States, as a host state, does not fulfill its obligations. The Russian diplomat added that Washington justified the visa problem with a security consideration. This argument cannot be considered anything but an excuse. Kuzmin called it funny and absurd.

Russkiy Mir reported that eighteen Russian diplomats did not receive American visas. Russia proposed to move the meetings of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly from the United States from 2020. According to Dmitry Polyansky, who holds the post of Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, the First Committee and the UN Disarmament Commission may convene in Austria or Switzerland.
