Rare Russian-language periodicals exhibition opens in USA

New Russian Word newspaper

The exhibition devoted to the history of the Russian-language press across the ocean has opened in the US, TASS reports. It locates in the Russian diplomatic representation in New York. The occasion is timed to coincide with the 20th World Congress of the Russian Press. The forum takes place in the "most Russian" district of the city - Brooklyn.

The Russian State Library and National Library of Russia are among the event organizers.

There are real rarities on display: newspapers, magazines, books published in the United States in Russian as well as the number of the first Russian overseas newspaper titled Alaska Herald. It was issued by the priest Agapiy Goncharenko arrested in the 19th century for criticizing the autocracy. He was forced to go abroad and in 1868 he founded the first Russian newspaper in the United States in San Francisco. New Russian word newspaper is also on display. It was first printed in 1910 in New York. Along with them, there are the literary almanacs Experiments, Russian Journal, Native Dali. New York's New Journal is also an exhibit there. It first published The Kolyma tales by Shalamov, poetry and prose by Bunin, Solzhenitsyn, Brodsky and Nabokov.

As Russkiy Mir reported, the media have a huge role in preserving the multinational cultural community and the linguistic identity of Russian compatriots. World Congress of the Russian Press agenda includes issues of events coverage both in our country and abroad, positive image of Russia creation. The problem of observing the rights of compatriots for access to information and communication in Russian is also discussed.
