Russian scientists from Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Science have completed a map of the Far East and the Black Sea with indication of the most dangerous spots where tsunami threat is very high in the future, RIA Novosti reports.
The project aim is to evaluate tsunami threat in the long-term perspective. Scientists from academic institutes of Siberia created a math model of tsunami waves and had to analyze all the seismic data of the above-mentioned regions.
The specialists calculated the tsunami threat map of the Far Eastern coast and the Black Sea coast for one hundred, two hundred and even one thousand years ahead. However, mathematicians admit that there is a possibility of sudden destructive tsunami waves difficult to forecast, so we cannot turn a blind eye to this fact.
One of the map developers Vyacheslav Gusyakov remarked that the Eastern coast of Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands are located in the zone with high tsunami risks, so it would be impossible to shelter from some of them. The level of danger is considerably less for the Black Sea coast, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.
