Russian artist Ilya Glazunov dies at 87

pravmir.ruSoviet and Russian artist, People's Artist of the Soviet Union Ilya Glazunov has died in Moscow at the age of 87 due to the heart failure, RIA Novosti reports. The daughter of the deceased, Vera Glazunova has noted that last rites will be held at the Elokhovsky Patriarch Cathedral, and the burials will take place at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.

Being a big admirer of his art, Russian President visited Ilya Glazunov Art Gallery many times. Vladimir Putin has passed through his press secretary condolences to the artists's relatives.

The Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky was shocked to receive the news. He has commented that the death of Glazunov is an irretrievable loss for Russian culture. The head of the Union of Artists of Russian Federation Andrey Kovalchuck has marked that it is hard to underestimate Glazunov's cultural achievements.

The author of more than three thousand works, such as portraits and landscapes, monumental historical paintings, theatre and decorative arts, Ilya Glazunov is one of the most famous and influential Russian and Soviet realist painters. Ilya Glazunov has become popular in 1956 when he received Gran Prix of the International contest in Prague. During his life he received many awards like People's Artist of the USSR, Order Vishnu (Laos), Jawaharlal Nehru (India), the Order of St. Michael (Portugal), a gold medal «for his contributions to world culture and civilization» (UNESCO), and many others.
