Estonian police detained a resident of Kohtla-Jarve for refusing to remove the St. George ribbon from his car, the Delfi website reported, citing local police. For using a symbol that is prohibited in Estonia, the owner of the car was handcuffed and a case was opened under an administrative article, TASS reports.

The police saw a St. George's ribbon attached to the rearview mirror of a parked car and demanded that the driver remove the symbol. He refused to do so.

Police officers handcuffed the city resident and detained him; a case was opened against him under an article of the administrative code.

Kohtla-Jarve is located in eastern Estonia. According to the latest census, 70% of its inhabitants are Russian.

The use of St. George's ribbon is prohibited in Estonia, and heavy fines are issued for its violation. This year, the country has banned the celebration of Victory Day using Russian and Soviet symbols in a number of regions where there is a large Russian community.
