Vladimir Mayakovsky's 130th anniversary celebrated in Russia

July, 19 marks the 130th anniversary of the great poet and playwright Vladimir Mayakovsky. The anniversary of the poet is celebrated in different cities of Russia and abroad, the Mayakovsky Fest 2023 festival started in Moscow on Wednesday, TASS reports.

Vladimir Mayakovsky was born in the south of the Russian Empire, in the Georgian village of Baghdati, into a family of descendants of Cossacks. In his youth, the future poet was captured by revolutionary ideas, he became interested in versification during his stay in Butyrka prison.

Later he joined the Futurists, gained wide popularity thanks to his poems and public speaking. At the age of less than 20 years, Mayakovsky released his first poem collection "I", wrote the  poem "Nate!" and the "Vladimir Mayakovsky" play.

After the revolution, he was declared one of the leading poets of the country. 

The poet passed away in April, 1930.

The festival dedicated to the Mayakovsky's 130th anniversary is organized by the Exhibition of Economic Achievements and the Moscow Museum of the Poet and will last until July, 23. The start of the marathon will be given by the "Yasam.Mayakovsky" production. The program of the festival includes performances and master classes.

Events in honor of the anniversary of the Russian poet are held not only in Russia, but also abroad. The Week of Vladimir Mayakovsky started in Astana the day before, it will include an exhibition, educational events and a reading evening.

Last week, a series of events was held to mark the 130th anniversary of the poet in Cyprus. A lecture, a reading concert and other events were held in the library of the Russian Center for Science and Culture.
