The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity has now become an official holiday in Russia, TASS reports. The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, June 28.

It notes that the holiday is established to preserve family values and spiritual education of the younger generation. The decree comes into force from the date of its signing.

The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is celebrated on July 8. For this holiday, they chose the day of memory of the holy faithful Peter and Fevronia of Murom. Since ancient times, the couple has been revered as a symbol of  fidelity in marriage.

The history of the Murom prince Peter and the daughter of the Ryazan beekeeper Fevronia is described in the ancient Russian chronicle. A girl who lived in the 13th century cured a man of a deadly disease. Having fallen in love with each other, the couple lived together all their lives, despite all the obstacles, and died in one hour. It happened on July 8.

Traditionally, the ceremony of awarding medals "For Love and Loyalty" is timed to coincide with this day. They are awarded to couples who have been married for many years. Among them are not only Russian families. The honorary award awaits compatriots who now live in Europe, Asia and America. Special services are held in Orthodox churches.

Various campaigns and events are held for the holiday in many regions of the country. The city of Murom is considered the capital of the holiday.
