The number of Russian scientists who went abroad for work or an internship has almost halved during the pandemic, TASS reports. According to a study conducted at the Higher School of Economics, 277 scientists traveled abroad last year. Meanwhile, in 2019, more than 500 of them went abroad.

the experts analysed almost 570 higher educational institutions, research institutes, national research and government research centers.

At the same time, the pandemic had virtually no effect on the number of researchers coming to Russia from abroad. Last year, this figure more than doubled the number of people leaving the country.

Young representatives of natural science make the largest number of trips abroad. There were almost two thirds of them. They are followed by specialists in technical sciences - 15% of them travel abroad. There are even fewer representatives of agricultural sciences traveling abroad - only 6%. The least mobile are representatives of the humanities and medical sciences: 4% and 2%, respectively.

As a rule, Russian researchers traveled for up to one year to conduct joint research. Most often they go to Germany, France, USA, China and Vietnam.

It is also mainly scientists employed in the field of natural and technical sciences who come to Russia to work. Most of them are under 30 years old, with a PhD degree. The most attractive for foreigners are scientific organizations located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Tomsk regions. As a rule, foreign scientists come to work in Russian universities, about a third of them study in the country. More than half of the foreign researchers who came to Russia over the past three years came from the CIS countries, China, Germany, India and the United States.
