Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which are part of the BRICS alliance, have announced plans to create a joint virtual vaccine research and development center to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The statement was published following an online meeting of health ministers of the five states, TASS reports.

The message indicates that the creation of the center will help maintain the "momentum of cooperation."

During the meeting, the ministers recognized the importance of equitable access to high-quality and affordable COVID-19 vaccines, as the BRICS countries had previously undertaken to conduct a large-scale vaccination campaign.

During the meeting, the participants agreed on the need to create a comprehensive early warning system for the virus and open modern laboratories for sequencing the genome of pathogens.
