Literacy Day is celebrated around the world on Tuesday, 8 September. It was founded by UNESCO in the mid-1960s on the recommendation of the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy. The date of the celebration is timed to the beginning of this meeting, the Scientific Russia website reports.

The holiday is aimed at developing the actions of international organizations to spread literacy, which remains one of the most important areas of work for UNESCO. In 2020, this day is dedicated to teaching and learning literacy in the face of the coronavirus crisis.

The key site of the holiday is the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Various actions, festivals, contests and quizzes are planned in Russia. Unfortunately, due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation, most of them are held online.

According to UNESCO, about 750 million adults on the planet cannot read, and about 250 million children do not have basic reading and writing skills. The lowest rates are in African countries and Southwest Asia. In this regard, UN experts have developed an action plan to improve the quality and accessibility of education, assigning the coordinating role of all its stages to UNESCO.
