A treasure trove with gold and silver coins of Russian origin was found with the help of a metal detector near Cork (Ireland) by one of the local residents. The find dates back to the 10th century; these are the most ancient coins of another country found in Ireland, according to RussianIreland.com.

According to the site, similar coins were minted in Kievan Rus' for payments to merchants and mercenaries. It is possible that a mercenary who received a salary from a customer brought the coins to the territory of Ireland and buried them in the ground.

The heavy rain helped to find the treasure bybringing down part of the ravine. Robert Carly, who lives nearby and is fond of searching for rarities, discovered a leather wallet with coins that had lain in the ground for a thousand years at the place where the ground collapsed.

Six years ago, the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, as well as museums from Ireland, Norway, Denmark and other countries, presented in London an exhibition of archaeological finds dating back to the Viking Age.
