The Russian authorities have imposed a temporary entry ban for foreign citizens and stateless persons. Restrictive measures are aimed at countering the spread of coronavirus infection, according to RIA Novosti. The measures will come into force tomorrow, March 18, and will last until the beginning of May.

The ban did not include truck drivers transporting goods. It is also possible to enter the country to foreign diplomats and persons who permanently reside on the Russian territory. Crews of ships and trains are also allowed to cross the border.

According to the head of the Russian government Mikhail Mishustin, all these steps meet the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Prime Minister indicated that the restrictions were caused by special circumstances, and emphasized that they were only temporary.

Russkiy Mir reported that, the day before, passenger flights were limited for all countries of the European Union, as well as to Switzerland and Norway, with the exception of flights to Geneva and Oslo. All passengers will pass through terminal F at the capital's Sheremetyevo Airport. Charter flights will be organized so that Russian and foreign citizens are able to return home.

Previously, air traffic had been limited to China, South Korea, and Iran. Three days ago, flights to France, Italy, Germany, Spain and vice versa were reduced.

Since March 13, Italian citizens have been banned from obtaining Russian visas. The number of people infected with the coronavirus is increasing. The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic.
