The rectors of Russian and Cuban universities met in Havana to discuss plans for future cooperation, Rossotrudnichestvo reports on its website.

According to the Minister of Higher Education of Cuba, José Ramón Saborido, the two countries are bound by about eighty agreements on cooperation in the field of education. More than 300 Cubans study in Cuba in the framework of One hundred scholarships program.

The head of the Russian embassy in Cuba Andrei Guskov has no doubt that all necessary conditions for deepening and expanding cooperation between the two countries are already present. Besides that, the diplomat added, the cooperation between the two countries goes beyond academic or student exchanges and expands to the training of highly qualified personnel necessary for the Cuban economy, as well as the training of specialists for joint research in high-tech fields.

The rectors of Russian and Cuban universities touched upon the possibilities of organizing joint research work, the development of exchanges of teachers and students, as well as the practical issues of training specialists in Russia for further work in joint projects.

As a result of the event, sixteen new cooperation agreements were signed between the higher educational institutions of Russia and Cuba.
