Russia will represent about 1,000 books at the International Book Fair in Kolkata, which will be held from January 29 to February 9. This year Russia is taking part in the fair in special status of a "theme country." Visitors to the Russian pavilion will be able to get acquainted with new editions, meet famous Russian writers and visit art exhibitions, the Year of Literature website reports.

The Indian chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the deputy head of the Federal Press and Mass Communications Agency Vladimir Grigoryev, Russia's ambassador to India Nikolai Kudashev, Russia's consul general in Kolkata Alexey Idamkin took part in the opening ceremony.

Russia has one of the largest booths at the fair – it was designed with the help of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute. Two large expositions will be placed in the pavilion: illustrations by Alexander Melikhov to the notes of the Russian merchant Athanasius Nikitin Traveling over the Three Seas (he visited India during his travels) and works by students of the Moscow Institute of Graphics and Art.

A group of Russian writers will take part in the work of the Russian pavilion. The delegation includes Yevgeny Vodolazkin, Andrey Gelasimov, Peter Aleshkovsky and other writers, as well as authors of books for children Anna Goncharova and Natalya Volkova.
