The anniversary of the famous Russian artist Ilya Repin is celebrated on Monday, August 5. This year marks 175 years since the finest and most celebrated Peredvizhnik birthday, TASS reports.
The Tretyakov Gallery is going to celebrate this date with a musical evening. The guests will listen to excerpts from the works of Russian composers such as Chernomor's March from Ruslan And Lyudmila opera by Mikhail Glinka, Lullaby Volkhov from Sadko opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, Bell Ringing from Boris Godunov opera by Mussorgsky, Russian folk song Ey, ukhnem… and others.
The central event of the anniversary year was a major exhibition, which opened in the spring at the Tretyakov Gallery. In less than three months, almost three hundred thousand people visited it. Russkiy Mir reported that the exposition was the largest in the past quarter century. Repin's works occupy three floors of the largest exhibition halls. The public can see the paintings created by the artist within 50 years, which were brought to the gallery from 35 collections. Russian and foreign museums and private collections are among them.
The organizers noted that Repin is not only a great artist, but also a great citizen. His social circle, the breadth of thoughts and views are clearly seen from his works.
The exposition includes Barge Haulers on the Volga, Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks and other works known in Russia and around the world. They comprehensively demonstrate the different stages of the master’s creativity and activities.
The exposition is built according to the chronological principle and includes fourteen sections. After the exhibit at the Krymsky Val section of the Tretyakov gallery, the exhibition will move to the Russian Museum, and the museums of the French and Finnish capitals.
Ilya Repin was born in the city of Chuguev and became famous as an artist in the neighborhood while still being very young. He studied at the Academy of Arts and was awarded the Big Gold medal and a scholarship to study abroad. He spent several years in Italy and France.
