The ballet of the Mariinsky Theater starts its tour in Germany on December 21, the Ministry of Culture reports on its website. The dancers from St. Petersburg will be performing on the Baden-Baden stage during the week. Christmas tours have already become a tradition for the famous theater team.

Both classical and modern productions will be presented to the public this time. World-famous masters as well as beginners will perform on the stage.

German ballet lovers will be invited to an evening of one-act ballets on Friday. Its program includes The Prodigal Son by George Balanchine, Russian Overture by Maxim Petrov and Violin Concerto No. 2 by Anton Pimonov. The dancers will perform with the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.

The European audiences will also have the chance to see one of the most famous choreography performances in the world. Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, staged by Marius Petipa, has long become a visit card of Russian ballet.

The work of contemporary ballet masters will be shown twice, including The Seasons staged by Ilya Zhivoy to Richter's music (based on Vivaldi) and The Cat on the Tree in Pimonov's choreography to the music by Nico Muhly and Teitur Lassen.

The tour will end with a gala concert full of ballet numbers form various eras, including Carnaval by Michel Fokine to Schumann’s music, the third part of Balanchine’s The Jewels - Diamonds to Tchaikovsky’s Music and Maxim Petrov’s Divertiment of the King to Rameau’s Music.
