The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Lamberto Zannier have discussed the situation over Russian-speaking residents in Ukraine and the Baltic countries. Their meeting took place on October 29, in the Russian capital, TASS reports.
The minister informed the international organization representative about the Russian priorities in this direction. He pointed out a permanently worsening situation of Russian-speaking minorities in the Baltic republics and Ukraine’s Russian-speaking population. The head of the foreign ministry reminded of the new laws that the Kiev authorities are planning to adopt.
Sergey Lavrov also reiterated the need of work on the rights of national minorities' protection on the OSCE platform. In addition, the minister confirmed that Moscow aspires a constructive dialogue with all countries belonging to the organization on this issue.
Lamberto Zannier noted that during meetings with representatives of Kiev he always rose the issue of discrimination against the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine. The official added that he took into account the concern of the Russian side about the new law on education adopted by the Ukrainian authorities. Russkiy Mir reported that this legislative initiative practically prohibited the Russian language in the entire educational system of Ukraine.
