International Music Day welcomes friends from abroad in Moscow

The 15th Moscow Meets Friends Festival opens today, on October, 1 in the Russian capital, TASS reports. It is timed to coincide with the International Music Day.

The Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov will perform at the opening concert. Young musicians, scholarship recipients of the Spivakov International Charity Foundation, ensembles and solo singers from Russia, Germany, Georgia, Israel, China, Ukraine, Japan will also appear on the stage of the Moscow International Performing Arts Center.

The Mercy Prize will be presented at the opening of the festival. The famous cardiac surgeon Leo Bockeria gets it.

The festival is launched to coincide with the Year of the Volunteer, the Russia and Japan Cross-Year and the Cross-Year of Russian and Austrian Music.

This is not the only event dedicated to the Music Day.  The laureates of Elena Obraztsova vocal contest perform on October 1. There are also a concert for the violinist David Oistrakh anniversary. The David Oistrakh String Quartet and pianist Eliso Virsaladze take part in the latter.

The audience also looks forward to the performance of the famous pianist Denis Matsuev. He plays on a surprise-concert.

The founder of the group the White Stripes Jack White performs for those who are more interested in rock music.

Moskino Cinemas joins the holiday. Today they show eight Soviet music films. The entrance is free.
