Rally in defense of Russian Schools held in Riga

Defenders of the Russian Schools dedicated their 1st of May’ protest marching to the educational reorganization in Latvia, TASS reports. The headquarters of the Russian Schools’ Defense and Latvian Russian Union party.

The protesters demanded to cancel recent amendments to the Law on Education annihilating school education in the Russian language. About 10 000 people gathered at the Dailes Theatre in order to march along the central street of Riga holding banners For Russian Schools! For Our Children! Say No to Annihilation of Russian Education! The central street was deliberately chosen for the rally, as its name Brivabas is translated from Latvian into Russian as Freedom. Therefore, they fought for Freedom at the Freedom street.

The European Parliament deputy and Co-chairman of Latvian Russian Union party Miroslav Mitrofanov has mentioned that the organizers intended to return an initial meaning to the 1st of May of fighting for interests and rights of people.

As per the Russkiy Mir Foundation, Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis approved of amendments to the Law on Education implying full annihilation of teaching in Russian at schools and kindergartens of the country. The reorganization is to come in force starting 2020.
