New Russian open space operations record is set

04.02.2018

roscosmos.ruTwo Russian astronauts Alexander Misurkin and Anton Shkaplerov spend 8 hours 13 minutes working outside the International Space Station, setting a new time record. Their stay was 6 minutes longer then previous record made by Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazansky, RIA Novosti informs.

The spacewalk was done on purpose of Space Station Antenna Repair. Because of certain complications the cosmonauts went out of schedule and wrapped up the work later than was planned. This antenna is used for communications with Russia's Mission Control.

Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov was the very first man who opened the airlock exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission for a 12 minutes and 8 seconds spacewalk in 1965.

The 8 hours and 56 minutes world record on being in the open space belongs to American astronauts.
