sothebys.comSotheby's experts call “exceptional in its virtuosity” the large-scale portrait painted by Nikolai Fetchin in 1908, his final year of study at the St Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. The initial estimation of the oil was about $1,5 mln, but at the Sotheby's Russian Art auction the price more than tripled. Nadezhda Sapozhnikova's portrait went under the hammer for a record price of $4,6 mln.

14 works by avant-garde painter Alexandra Exter were also among top lots of the auction. Art of Konstantin Makovsky, Petr Vereschagin, and Isaak Levitan participated in current Russian Art auction, as well.

In the closest future Sotheby's plans to hold Soviet Art auction timed with 100 years of Russian Revolution. The Miner oil by Alexander Deineka is going to be the most expensive lot with starting price of £3.5 mln ($4,6 mln).

It's worth mentioning that the Russian auction week has started yesterday in London with the top lot Still life with teapot and oranges by Natalya Goncharova sold for $3,2 mln, five times more than initial price.

The popular Russian auction week organised by Christie's, Sotheby's, MacDougall's and Bonhams is held twice a year.
