The gala awarding ceremony took place in the capital of Belgium. The medal established by Russian, Belgian and Norwegian Academies of Sciences was handed out to Elena Popova by Russian Ambassador to Brussels, Alexander Tokovinin.

The awarding ceremony is a part of Space Weather European Week of agenda conducted in Ostend every year.

The Alexander Chizhevsky medal is handed out to scientists studying space meteorology who are not afraid to take risks and ready to use non-standard solutions to reach success. This is one of the three medals established four years ago by academies of the three countries.

According to Russian Ambassador, this medal is a considerable contribution into consolidation of international scientific society. It counterbalances political and cultural issues of the contemporary world. The diplomat has underlined that these awards are bright examples of cooperation and interaction in science which is beneficial for everybody.

Space meteorology is a research of atmosphere and meteorological phenomena with specialized Earth satellites.
