Russian specialists are going to ask visitors of not-yet-bombed Palmyra to help creating a 3D model of the ancient city. This task is undertaken by Geoscan Company, which develops geographic information system of Palmyra, according to TASS. Institute of the History of Material Culture RAS, the Hermitage and Saint Petersburg State University are also involved in this project.
Besides 3D model of the modern Palmyra state, models of main historical objects are to be developed. This requires hiring professional renovators. Amateur pictures taken by tourists might be of great help here too. Of course, many of them will dub each other, but experts believe that they may contain some interesting and necessary elements. Scientists will add them to pictures made by Russian expedition participants.
3D model, developed in Saint Petersburg will embrace the results of archaeological and historical research conducted in the ancient city before, as well as geospatial map of its present state. Archaeologists and military topographers took part in this work as well. Aerial photography made during expedition to Syria is taken as a model basis.
Each object contains information about the time, degree and character of its war damage. Scattered data about three centuries of the city examination and its present condition gathered under one software cover will become a result of this challenging task.
