Russian specialists to restore Arch of Triomphe in Palmyra

specialists from Russia will undertake work on the restoration of the Arch of Triomphe in Palmyra, TASS reports. According to the head of the Center for Rescue Archeology of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Natalya Solovieva, who is the project leader, local residents will also take part in the work.

She said that a plan is already being drawn up to restore the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Russian authorities allocate money for most of the work, and Damascus allocates part of the funds.

Restoration work is scheduled to begin at the end of the summer. They will continue for three years.

Earlier, Damascus approved the project for the restoration of the Arch of Triomphe in Palmyra. It was prepared by Russian specialists from the Hermitage and the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as their Syrian colleagues. The project is being implemented under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society with the support of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
