Russian specialists are starting restoration of the Arc of Triomphe in Syrian Palmyra, RIA Novosti reports.

The leading specialists of the Center for Rescue Archeology of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences will be restoring the Arc, which was destroyed by radical Islamists.

The project is supported by the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Russian scientists, archaeologists, and restorers will be joined by local colleagues. Scientific and public organizations from both countries will join the work.

Geologists will come to the site first. They will determine what material the building is made of, since it is preferable to use original components during restoration.

It is assumed that the restoration of the Triumphal Arch of Palmyra will take about three years.
