The anniversary of the liberation of Ukraine from the Nazi occupiers is celebrated on Monday, October 28, the Izvestia newspaper writes. At the same time, large celebrations at the state level were not planned. Memorial events took place in different cities. As explained by the organizing committee of the Immortal Regiment of Ukraine, local media received an unofficial ban on coverage of events. Nevertheless, most Ukrainians honor the memory of those who struck for the victory, fought on the fronts, worked in factories, at home with their relatives.

The Nazi occupation in Ukraine lasted more than three years. More than 1.3 million Ukrainians gave their lives at the front, the equal number of people died in concentration camps. According to historians, the Ukrainian people became one of the most affected by the Nazis and their minions.

Members of the All-Ukrainian Coordinating Council of Organizations of Russian Compatriots congratulated the veterans and residents of Ukraine. They called to honor the memory of those who did not spare themselves at the front and in the rear, liberated Ukraine, revived it from ruins and ashes.

President Volodymyr Zelensky took part in the memorial ceremony, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Kiev park of Eternal Glory. At the same time, he once again equated the heroes of the Great Patriotic War with the current "defenders of Ukraine."

Earlier Petro Poroshenko, who was then the Ukrainian president, signed a law according to which members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists - Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN-UIA) are now considered combat veterans. The activities of the OUN are prohibited in Russia. During the Great Patriotic War, OUN militants collaborated with fascist intelligence agencies and fought against the Soviet Union. Bandera, as they were called by the name of the leader of the OUN, Stepan Bandera, killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Viktor Medvedchuk, one of the leaders of the Opposition Platform - For Life party, congratulated the residents of Ukraine on the holiday. In his opinion, the current generation is in unpaid debt to the liberators. Therefore, everything must be done so that neo-Nazi sentiments are not spread in the country. The politician expressed regret that radical nationalists, who want to rewrite important historical pages and oblivion the feat of their ancestors, were becoming more active.
