Director of the Uffizi Gallery Eike Schmidt hopes that cultural cooperation with Russia will soon resume and the two countries will be able to once again exchange projects and exhibitions, TASS reports.

Schmidt called the opening of the Museum of Russian Icons two years ago his most important achievement as head of the Uffizi Gallery. It presents masterpieces of Russian icon painting kept in the Medici collection, the largest and most valuable outside Russian borders.

Eike Schmidt stressed that the museum introduces visitors ''to the great Russian culture'' even in such difficult times, when travel is complicated and joint exhibitions with Russian museums are not held.

Earlier, Eike Schmidt called attempts to cancel Russian culture a mistake. Getting to know the culture of another nation allows opens up a lot of new things about others, and thanks to this, about oneself, he is sure. This is precisely the main idea of the Museum of Russian Icons, which the legendary Italian museum opened in early 2022.

Without Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Shostakovich, world culture would be impoverished, humanity would be thrown back, Eike Schmidt is sure.
