Russian woman wins World Rapid Chess Championship

Russian chess player Anastasia Bodnaruk became the winner of the World Rapid Championship held in Samarkand. Overall, five Russian athletes made it into the top ten chess players of the championship, R-Sport reports.

On Thursday, December, 28, Anastasia Bodnaruk played a draw with Chinese players Zhai Mo and Lei Tingjie, as well as Indian chess player Humpy Koneru. Over the course of eleven rounds, Bodnaruk, Lei Tingjie and Koneru each won 8,5 points.

The title of the world's strongest chess player in rapid chess was played out in a tiebreaker between Bodnaruk and Koneru - the Russian woman turned out to be stronger.

Other Russian participants also showed a high level of skill. The top 10 of the competition included Valentina Gunina, Ekaterina Lagno, Alexandra Goryachkina and Leya Garifullina.

On December, 29, the World Blitz Championship starts in the same city of Uzbekistan.

Earlier, eight-year-old chess player Roman Shogjiev from Russia beat the 28-year-old champion of the World Chess Olympiad at a competition in Samarkand. The championship prize fund totaled a million dollars.
