Eight-year-old Russian beats winner of World Chess Olympiad

Young Russian chess player Roman Shogjiev beat the winner of the World Chess Olympiad at the World Rapid Championship, TASS reports. The eight-year-old athlete fought with the champion from Uzbekistan, who is 20 years older than him. The tournament took place in Samarkand, its prize fund is one million dollars.

Roman Shogdzhiev, who played with black pieces, proposed a draw, but Vakhidov refused. After this, Shogdzhiev brought the game to victory in seven moves.

Roman Shogdzhiev previously became the best chess player in the world among boys under 8 years old. He won the world title at a tournament held in Egypt in October. He became the winner one stage before the final round, as he scored ten points out of a possible ten.

Earlier, Russian Alexey Grebnev became the Asian champion among juniors, Arseny Nesterov received silver at the world junior championships in classical and rapid chess.
