The Russians consider Roman Kostomarov the athlete of the year, RBC reports. These are the results of a study conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion. Survey participants could propose up to three names.

The name of the famous figure skater was chosen by 8% of respondents. Figure skater Kamilla Valieva became second - she was chosen by 5% of Russians. Hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, skier Alexander Bolshunov, as well as figure skaters Evgenia Medvedeva and Alexandra Trusova scored 2% each.

Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov was hospitalized almost a year ago. He was diagnosed with total viral-bacterial damage to the lungs. He remained connected to the ECMO machine for a long time. This helped save the athlete’s life, but led to circulatory problems, which, in turn, ended in several amputations on his limbs.

The figure skater left the hospital six months ago, and on December, 17 he was back on the ice. Together with his partner Tatyana Navka, the athlete performed the programme, which brought him an Olympic gold medal.
